Development Site

This photograph was made in Shanghai’s business district. About twenty people—men and women—came out of their apartments when they saw me setting up my camera. One man turned on a bright sodium light for me, which illuminates the foreground. We couldn’t communicate well, but I understood that once the construction was complete the workers would all leave Shanghai.
