The collage An Esquiss for a Girl M I is part of my new project 2012. This work epresses the contemporary way both Western and Eastern cultures understand ‘The Annunciation’. I find that the moment of annunciation resembles a great transformation as well as an instant of great irony. I have reconstructed this important moment through my own imagination - the Virgin Mary wearing a school uniform, four Archangels and the four Devas, the heavenly guardians of Buddhism. Growing up in Korea, Yoon dreamed of being one of the blonde haired, blue-eyed beauties she admired on the covers of Western magazines. As an attempt to live out her fantasy she creates light-hearted and heavily stylized images of young Asian girls enhanced to fit these criteria. By combining the extremely different Eastern and Western cultures in her art she attempts to make her audience question their preconceptions. In addition, Yoon’s work is intricate in detail with many layers of meaning. Months of research into every aspect ensure that nothing you see is without significance.
